From 1974, (when half of the seat was split off to create the Hazel Grove constituency), Cheadle had safe Conservative majorities until the 1997 election, when the Liberal Democrats reduced the margin to around 3,000 votes. She died on 29 May 2005, triggering a by-election in July 2005, where Mark Hunter was elected with a majority of 3,657.
