Quakers are members of the Religious Society of Friends, a faith that emerged as a new Christian denomination in England during a period of religious turmoil in the mid-1600's and is practiced today in a variety of forms around the world. Members of the different Quaker factions are all commonly united in the belief that the presence of God lives in every human being. At the rise of meeting, the witnesses, including the youngest children, are asked to sign the wedding certificate as a record. The goal of all Quaker yearly meetings is to support, nurture, and protect the discernment of each meeting. During and after the English Civil War (1642–1651) many dissenting Christian groups emerged, including the Seekers and others. Over the years, each state has set rules for the procedure.
